Remembrance and Reflection on
2nd Anniversary of Turkish Earthquake

Dear Locators,

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the formation of Locators Online and the second anniversary of the devastating Turkish earthquake of 1999.

The earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck at 3:02AM on 17th August 1999 and took the lives of over 15,000 individuals according to official numbers. The unofficial number of casualties, however, stands at over 40,000. It was this disaster that inspired the formation of Locators Online by the SURF Internet Education Centre.

During the past year we have helped reunite 357 individuals with their loved ones during the El Salvador, Indian and Peruvian earthquakes. We also helped to locate an American naval officer in Italy.

Our partnership with NetAig.org - an agency of United Nations Volunteers and United Nations Development Program - has brought the number of Locators Online volunteers up to 189 worldwide.

On the first anniversary of our formation, we would like to thank all those who continue to give their support to our organisation and take this opportunity to remember all those who lost their lives during natural disasters, their families and all those who have been affected by their devastation.
